Benzalkonium Chloride is a cationic surfactant and a non-oxidizing biocide with broad-spectrum and highly effective bactericidal and algaecidal capabilities. Moreover, due to its broad antimicrobial properties, Benzalkonium Chloride is also used in the medical field, for example, in products like band-aids. However, there are studies that focus on the potential risks of Benzalkonium Chloride as an emerging environmental contaminant, indicating that it may cause genotoxic effects on mammalian and plant cells at environmentally relevant concentrations.
